Arts Toronto Podcast # 5 feat. Robbie Butcher

This week we have special guest, Robbie Butcher aka. the drummer from HotKid talking with us about some of his creative influences and where we can draw some inspiration from within the current landscape of music today. And if we’re sick of listening to your current rotation, Robbie drops serious knowledge and recommends a brick ton of kick ass bands….

Tonight we discussed some of our favorite 90′s music only to realize that music from the early 90′s (pre-internet) have a relatively low Youtube view count. Additionally we talk about how much we love Rebecca Black’s response to her hate mail from Youtube. We cut the podcast short to meet some friends and catch a show at the Drake Underground…
We discuss the video “Read Me Tom Robbins” behind Rick’s back.
This week we discuss changes in the music industry and how artists were making away with millions was a fluke.
“Headquarters” and the later one “Rehersal” posted yesterday seem to indicate that Toronto band Death from Above 1979 are coming back!
I was immediately drawn to Kris’ style of painting. It’s the blushed non-innocence of his characters that really strike me, as if each portrait was captured only moments after a guilty teenage make-out session.
This week we discuss institutional art versus art for the people and how we put a value on art as a society.
I was surprised to see the production team behind the special FX and direction of this trailer were from Toronto, as what looks to be a small collective of artists called “We can pretend”.
Saw these Hot Kids at Oz Studios last night. Sick show. Cool venue. The crowd was really into it and so were we. Thanks to Ameet for dragging us out to see this fresh indie outfit. Check out their enter-the-void-esque video by reactive studios… well done.
Since graduating from Sheridan College Illustration Rachel Ann Lindsay has become one of Toronto’s most inspired illustrators. Rachel Ann Lindsay is here to stay and if you didn’t know her name, you have definitely seen her work in the National Post or the Globe and Mail or at Holt Renfrew. We hope to see her soon on Arts Toronto.
